What is laminate flooring?
The four layers of laminate flooring have been heated and pressed together to form a single unit. The underlayers are shielded by a clear coating of aluminum oxide that is stain-resistant. Aluminum oxide and melamine combined with a decorative resin foundation constitute the next stage. This sits on top of the high-density fiberboard core made of wood composites, which has typically been saturated with resins to help it resist moisture. Finally, a supporting backing that is also heavily resin-infused rests on top of the core.

Laminate flooring will expand and contract in response to changes in humidity because it is constructed of natural cellulose fibers. The purpose of laminate flooring, which features interlocking tongue-and-groove connectors, is not to be fastened to the subfloor. Instead, it rests on top of it, allowing it to flex in response to variations in the humidity.

Laminate flooring is not seen as a good option in spaces that are susceptible to high amounts of humidity, such as bathrooms, saunas, and laundry rooms, for the same reason.
